For the past several weeks I have been writing Saturday Musings. I talk about pain and hummingbird and giants. If you want to read all of them, you can click here. But today, the topic is rain.
It rained all day yesterday here in Phoenix, and started me thinking about rain. Rain is a rich metaphor for many things.
It refreshes a parched land.
Its cleanses smoggy skies and dirty cars.
Rain brings new life.
As I pondered the meaning of rain, an unexpected prayer escaped my lips:
Lord, bring a rainy season in my life.
Couldn’t we all use some refreshing? Some cleansing? Some new life?
I feel like so many people are in a season of parchedness, where every movement is a struggle. Every reward comes at great cost, whether that cost be financial or relational or emotional.
It is time for some rain.
Another thing rain brings that we could use is joy. Who doesn’t remember jumping in puddles and giggling gleefully (whether this would make our parents happy or not? Life is hard, but we still need unadulterated joy in our lives.
It is time for some rain.
Rain is the signal for a change in seasons. Sometimes the rain signals the beginning of the monsoon season here in Arizona. In other locales, a good rainstorm shows the start of fall. In Seattle, it signals…okay, no metaphor is perfect. We need a change of seasons, a time for new beginnings, a new hope.
It is time for some rain.
I never thought of rain as signalling a change in seasons. Here in the Pacific Northwest, rain is simply a part of all seasons. 🙂 As a metaphor, however, I really like it. I really liked when you said we need unadulterated joy in our lives. Such truth, and a change in seasons can help shake us out our complacency to find that joy again. Nicely said!
Thanks Rebeca. I did put the disclaimer in there though. Truth is, this is kind of my own personal Five Minute Friday, because I don’t really think about this beforehand; I just write about what comes to mind when I sit outside on my swing in the back yard before the kids awaken. So I am always happy when it makes sense to others 🙂
Yes Chris bring on the rain and the blessings and growth that can come from it. #dudewriters4ever
I am not sure you understand how difficult this was to me to write. Rain is more something we see pictures of than actually experience here in the desert.
Sorry Chris I didn’t realize the struggle of it. I felt the ease of the words not the weight of them. Lord let me feel the weight of them in the future. Once again sorry dude, bless you.
It’s my peers that are worried when I skip or swing really high on a swing. But, sometimes it’s infectious. Why do only children get to puddle jump? Thanks for blessing us from your dry place.
If it never rains, then we never grow.. Yes, Lord bring the rain. Chris, I enjoy your Saturday musings.
Inspiring thoughts, Chris. As one feeling parched, dry, and thirsty for God to work in their life, this was definitely a word in due season! Yes, let it pour down, Lord. Send reviving rain to water our souls. We need Holy Spirit fire and rivers of refreshment hand in hand. Then we can burn with love and sprinkle showers of mercy and grace into the lives of others from the overflow of our hearts. Amen.
I envy you for your freedom to swing high and puddle jump. Still learning how to enjoy those moments in my life.
Joan, thank you for the kind words about this series.
Yes and amen, Joy. Yes and amen
